Defamation of character
This is a false statement made by one individual about another. This statement attempts to discredit that person’s character or reputation.There are two types of defamation, Slander and Libel.

Slander is when a statement is spoken usually in public.

Libel is when the statement is printed or broadcast on television. This can be words or images.

Contempt of court
Acting so as not to prejudice the outcome of a trial by not naming individuals, who might be protected by the law.

Copyright
Part of intellectual property law. Originators of material such as books, plays, songs, photographs etc. Have automatic ownership of that piece of work. As a result newspaper cannot use or copy this without explicit permission (and usually payment) from the originator.

Discrimination
It is illegal to discriminate against anyone on grounds of sex, age , disability or ethnic origin when recruiting or in the workplace. How such groups and issues are presented in the media are often representational. (e.g. stereotypes)

Ethical Issues
Issues of morality: what is right or wrong. Issues such as exploitation, sensationalism, offensive material (watershed), privacy etc.

Data protection act
Journalists will gather various information (data) when writing and investigating stories. these can be contact details and confidential information. when using this type of information in business it is necessary to use good practice.
