10/12/2015
Today I set out to finish the group self assessment then put it on my blog. I managed to finish the group self assessment and update my blog. At home I will update my blog more.

Group Self Assessment

The key strengths that were identified on the Peer Feedback were that first of all, the presenters sounded professional with their voice and tone. Furthermore, the News is appealing to the target audience and someone said that the language register and pronunciation from the presenter is good, formal and effective. The Ident for the weather update sounds appropriate and professional. The next group of peers that gave feedback said that we had a good use of music at the start of the jingle. Additionally, they said we had a good use of vox pops because they were clear and that the traffic report was very informative towards the drivers. They also said the weather report was good because it had its own Ident.

One of the areas we need to improve in is removing the background noise in some of the recordings. This will mean we will either have to re-record or cut out the parts with background noise, this is not a big issue because it is only at the start of the recording. Another thing we need to improve on is is adding indent to introduce the traffic report and the vox pops, it won’t take long to record indents on a dictaphone then edit them into the bulletin. As well as this, another thing we need to improve on is the reporter reading the lines a bit slower so it's easier to hear, we will do this by re-recording some parts not as fast as they are before.

Overall, we feel at this stage that the project has been relatively successful, and has not had too many issues throughout the production period. It’s felt that the news stories themselves are engaging, and we feel that the structure very much resembles a typical Radio News Bulletin on Commercial Radio. However, we must spend time attempting to develop the project, which includes the things mentioned above, such as the re-recording of some sections to remove background noise and make the components of the Bulletin more audibly pleasing. We also personally feel it is appropriate to add some form of sound bed to the production to act as a ‘filling’ to the broadcast, and make it feel a little more complete and well-polished. It also may assist us in the fact that very quiet background noises may not be noticeable anymore, meaning that we may not have to re-record quite so many parts.

Humberside FM draft script

Roles:
Sam Needham (Main Station Presenter)
Alex Bramley (Field Reporter)
Nathan Macdonald (Weather Reporter)

*Humberside FM News Jingle*
Humberside FM, brought to you by Macdonald’s Bakery.

Sam: The time is “--:--”, we start with the developing Scunthorpe Steel Crisis. The latest on the story is that there are new doubts about the future of the Tata Steel Plant. Tata Steel’s Chief Executive Karl-Ulrich Kohler has warned that the plant must be sold by April and that it has no further part in the Indian business. There are a variety of potential bidders believed to be interested in the site, with the Department for Business trying to lure buyers with a promise of long-term contracts, including a deal with Network Rail for a multibillion-pound railway overhaul. Our reporter Alex has more.

Alex: Thanks Sam. This recent crisis has really affected a lot of people in the area, lots have jobs have been lost. I'm here with Luke Fenwick, the one of the plant managers. So Luke how many jobs will be lost because of this crisis?

Luke:  I’m not 100% sure on the exact number but it is around 900 staff members will lose their jobs.

Alex: What affect do you think these job losses will have on the area and the economy?

Luke: Well I can imagine that a  lot people will leave the area in search for a new job

Sam: A man has been arrested under suspicion of Manslaughter in Hull as a result of his baby’s death. The 25 year old, Liam Laverick told the police that the child had fallen ill and that in a panic when trying to take his child to the nearby hospital, he has fallen twice whilst carrying the baby, which after a post-mortem examination, found that the baby had bleeding around the brain. Prosecutors told the jury at Hill Crown Court that Laverick has shook or thrown his baby and killed him. Laverick denies the charges.

Sam: In Grimsby, an armed robber escaped with cash after threatening staff and customers at a Grimsby bookmakers. Humberside Police have released CCTV footage of the masked raider who held up the Betfred Bookmakers on Lord Street at 9pm and was armed with a knife. He escaped with a small quantity of cash, but nobody was hurt. Detectives investigating the incident would like to speak to anyone who can identify the man or who witnessed him before or after the incident. You can find the CCTV footage on our website, humbersidefm.com.

Sam: Vauxhall are recalling 220,000 Zafira B models in fear that they are catching fire. The Zafira B was built between 2004 and 2015, and the model variants affected are those with manual air conditioning, or no air-condition at all, and the recall does not affect the current Zafira Tourer. Vauxhall sent letters out to owners regarding the recall, they believe that the problem is due to non-genuine parts being used to fix thermal fuses and blower motor resistors. The inspection at a Vauxhall dealer is said to take between 30 and 60 minutes, although no root fix has been implemented yet.

Sam: It has been revealed that almost a quarter of people in the region smoke. Health bosses are insisting that there is help for those who wish to quit, as the use of Tobacco is associated with an increased risk of a variety of different cancers. Respiratory Physician, Dr. Yasso tells us that ‘Smoking causes the highest burden of preventable illness and deaths with around 5% of hospital admissions being as a result of smoking’. The people of Grimsby had a lot about this…

Sam: Next up, let’s see how it’s looking out on the roads. It’s looking pretty good, we’ve got some minor congestion on the A16 at Victoria Street in Grimsby, it’s busy but things are still moving. Same on Castle Street on the A1079 at Mytongate in Hull, things are moving slow, but still are moving. On the A1033, on the East Yorkshire Westbound between Marfleet Avenue and Littlefair Road, the A1033 is closed because of roadworks, and on the A18 between Wheatley Hall Road and Thorne Road, it’s closed in both directions due to roadworks during the night, but there is a diversion in operations. Please take note though, that Barnby Dun Road is unsuitable for large vehicles due to a low bridge.

Let’s join Nathan with the Weather.

Nathan: Thanks Sam, the weather across the region is set to be cold throughout the weekend, cloudy throughout the remainder of Friday, sunshine and showers throughout Saturday with the chance of a dusting of snow on Sunday. Your highs will be 8*C and your lows will be nudging under freezing at -1*C. For the latest weather, check out the Weather page on our webside, humbersidefm.com

Sam: Thanks Nathan, and that’s the latest, the time is “--:--”.

Local News Stories

First Story: The Scunthorpe Steel Crisis: An Ongoing Story

Overview
‘In recent years, as resources in the UK become more expensive, the country has been looking at alternate places to get materials. This has caused a massive crisis for the UK in a variety of industries. The latest affected, the Steel Industry, an industry that keeps Scunthorpe thriving but is now falling to the ground. With well over a thousand job losses, the end of the Steel Industry for Scunthorpe is almost upon us. The job losses has resulted in a multitude of strikes and demonstrations with no currently no way to solve the issue.’

Reason for Selection
This story makes the main story for the local area due to the large significance it has. It’s had such a significant impact, that it has made it very high up in national news bulletins in stations such as BBC Radio 1 and 2. The matter will affect many people in our range (the average working person), due to many of them working in these sorts of factories or working in other businesses that support them.

Legal & Ethical Issues
The Data Protection Act 1998 could apply to this story some details cannot be released about this case. For example, it can be described that 2,000 are going to lose their jobs. However, it cannot be discussed that Alan Smith of 29 Workers Avenue will be made redundant unless the person states otherwise.

Second Story: Man Suspected of Manslaughter as a Result of a Baby’s Death in Hull.

Overview
‘Mr Laverick told the police he went into his son's room to see he had been sick and choked, he could apparently feel a heartbeat but no breathing. Then in a panic supposedly tripped over twice. After a post-mortem examination of the baby he was found to have bleeding around the brain. The prosecutors told the jury at Hull Crown Court that Liam Laverick had shook or thrown his baby and killed him. Mr Laverick 25, of Beeford grove, Hull, denies manslaughter.

Reason for Selection
I chose this story for our radio production because it a story from the Humberside area that will interest the target audience of the radio station and is a negative story that informs the listener on the case and trial.
News Values
This story is negative and makes a good news story because it is interesting and local. This story has meaningfulness because it is culturally proximate and relevant to the target audience. The first news value for this story may be frequency because there can be frequent updates to the case. Another news value for this story is Negativity because negative stories such as this one are more likely to be reported on than a positive story.

Possible legal & ethical issues
The first possible legal and ethical issue for this story may be defamation of character because if when getting interviews or vox pops someone's viewpoint may make the man suspected guilty or influence the viewpoint of other. Also they could include false accusations of what Mr Laverick has done. This would be a representation of a slander type of character defamation. The next possible legal issue may be Contempt of Court which is where we may not be able to name individuals that are protected by the law.

Third Story: Armed Robber Holds up Grimsby Bookmakers at Knifepoint

Overview
‘An armed robber escaped with cash after threatening staff and customers at a Grimsby bookmakers. Humberside police have released CCTV images of the masked raider who held up the Betfred bookmakers on Lord Street, Grimsby, at 9pm on Sunday, November 8, armed with a knife. The man wearing a bucket hat and with his face covered with what looks like a balaclava, entered the bookies and threatened a customer and staff with a knife before jumping over the counter. The robber escaped with a small quantity of cash. Luckily no one was hurt. Detectives investigating the incident would like to speak to anyone who can help identify the man or who witnessed him before or after the incident.

Reason for Selection
I chose this story because people in the local area will want to know about crime in the area, so the people in the area know how to protect themselves.

Possible Legal and Ethical Issues
This first issue i have spotted is the fact that the people involved with the robbery (customers/staff) will want their identities protected, this is contempt of court. The second issue I have found is the privacy of the people involved.

Fourth Story: Vauxhall Recalls 220,000 Zafira Bs Over Fire Concerns

Overview
‘Vauxhall has announced a recall of 220,000 Zafira B models built between 2005 and 2014. The cars affected are right hand drive models without climate control (manual ventilation controls) and those without Air Conditioning. It is due to a faulty component within the heating and ventilation system that could result in the car becoming engulfed in flames. Letters from Vauxhall have been sent out  to customers as of 12th November 2015.’

Reason for Selection
We decided to cover this story because of the sheer amount of people this can affect, which mainly includes our age bracket due to the fact that it’s a large, family car. Although it’s a nationwide concern, it’s still something that’s important for people in the local area. This was placed as the 4th most important story, although it’s a rather negative event as it could cause injury to innocent motorists, it isn’t such a sudden event (although it can be on an individual basis) and is a problem that Vauxhall/Opel is looking into ways of resolving.

For this story, you could potentially interview several different people. Including a relevant party from the manufacturer that works with these cars (at either a Vauxhall Dealership or Vauxhall Specialist Garage), which can take place using some form of studio interview. Or potentially a driver of a Zafira B, to get their opinions on the subject, which can be done by using Vox-Pops…

Legal & Ethical Issues
In the eventuality that owners of the Zafira B have to go to court with Vauxhall/Opel, then the Contempt of Court must not be breached and the report must have NO details that may influence the outcome of the Court Case.

Fifth Story: Figures Reveal Quarter in Region Smoke; Health Bosses Insist Help is Available

‘23.3% of people in North East Lincolnshire smoke. HEALTH bosses insist the help is there for people who want to quit smoking. 18% of people in England smoke. Tobacco use is associated with increased risk of several cancers, including lung, oesophagus, bladder, pancreas, kidney, liver, stomach, bowel, cervix, leukaemia and ovarian cancers. Dr Yasso, consultant respiratory physician at Grimsby's hospital, said: "Smoking causes the highest burden of preventable illness and death with around five per cent of hospital admissions attributable to smoking.’

Reason for Selection
I have selected this news story because a lot of people in the UK smoke so this will link to a lot of people who listen to radio station, even if the person who is listening doesn’t smoke they may know someone who does smoke.

Possible Legal and Ethical Issues
One issue i can find is that this story may discriminate people who smoke, this may represent everyone who smokes as irresponsible, therefore this can result in complaints to the radio station and the station losing listeners.
